About Celebrity Cruise Line
Celebrity Cruise Lines was founded in 1988 by the family owned Greek Conglomerate Chandris group. In fact, it was created as a high end line catering to the luxury cruise market which was relatively untapped at that time.
Celebrity Cruises was designed to compete with upscale lines like Holland America Lines before the latter was acquired by Carnival Corporation. Initially, it focused on voyages to Bermuda. The luxury cruise market was unchartered territory for Chandris when it launched Celebrity. Previously, Chandris focused on the low end cruise market with its budget line Chandris Fantasy Cruises.
Today, Celebrity operates a fleet of 11 cruise ships around the world. In addition to the 11 ships it currently in service, 3 more next generation ships in the Edge class are on order. In addition, Celebrity has unique rights to operate eco cruises in the Galapagos islands on three vessels called the Xpedition, Xploration y Flora after acquiring tour operator Ocean Adventures in 2016. It expanded guest capacity in the remote island chain by 65%.
Celebrity is the first major cruise line to hire a female CEO and President following the appointment of Lisa Lutoff-Perlo to the position in 2014.
