Recall Issued for Ring Video Doorbells After Several Catch Fire

Recall
A consumer recall has been issued for Ring video doorbells after 23 of them reportedly caught fire, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The company, which is owned by Amazon, said that more than 350,000 of their video doorbells sold in the U.S. and Canada are affected.

The recall involves Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation), model number 5UM5E5 smart doorbell cameras.  The video doorbells have a blue ring at the front and come in two colors: “satin nickel” (black and silver) and “venetian bronze” (black and bronze).

The devices were sold with a mounting bracket and a USB charging cable. The two-way audio doorbell can be hardwired or battery-powered and supports night vision.  The Ring logo is printed on the bottom front of the doorbell and the model and S/N are on a label on the back of the doorbell and the outer packaging.  Consumers can determine if their doorbell is included in the recall by entering the product serial number at http://support.ring.com/ring-2nd-gen-recall.

According to the recall notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, when the video doorbell is installed with improper screws, the batteries can overheat, resulting in the device igniting and catching fire.  Ring has received 23 reports of its video doorbells catching fire. Damages have included property damage and minor burn injuries.

The video doorbell devices were sold at storefronts, as well as online at both Amazon.com and Ring.com from June through October 2020. If you have one of the recalled models, you should discontinue use immediately and contact Ring for revised installation instructions. These revised installation instructions can also be found on the Ring support page.
